Zotero: Firefox as Reference Manager

Zotero is still
under development and not quite ready for a full
review, but it is definitely worth a look.
Zotero is a Firefox plugin which
retrieves text snippets, websites and
bibliographical records from the currently shown
webpage and stores them in a searchable database
which is managed and accessible through the
internet browser. For example you can do a
normal search at an online library and import
the results comfortably into your database with
a simple click on a button in the browser's
location bar. It also works with selected
journal sites, where you can even download
attached PDF-articles if available. Then you can
export your references into one of the popular
bibliographic formats for use in other
applications. At this stage Zotero's citation-insertion
capabilities are still quite rudimental and only
available for Word, and therefore the software
cannot yet fully replace any of the
full-featured bibliography tools. This might
change soon; Zotero is an ambitious
open-source project with a very promising
software architecture and developers' support.
Once this one is grown-up it will be beautiful -
and best of all: free! Keep an eye on it...
